Great Barrington’s Du Bois Center is a great resource
I just want to comment briefly on a letter, “Ignore Du Bois rumor mill,” which appeared on March 11. I know the economic times these days are brutal for nonprofits. I am greatly relieved to know that the Du Bois Center at Great Barrington is not closing. Over the past four years, I have attended educational programs at the center, watched classic films, purchased great books on African-American history, and seen some amazing historical artifacts. It’s almost like being at the Smithsonian.
The Du Bois Center is the town’s perfect visitors center. I often take my family and friends there. We visit the nearby Mahaiwe Cemetery, the most important Du Bois landmark in Great Barrington, where W. E. B. Du Bois buried his children, and learn a great deal about the civil rights leader from the center director, who’s an historian and teacher.
I hope more folks take advantage of this truly wonderful community resource.
