W. E. B. Du Bois, The Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study (Philadelphia: Published for the University 1889). 8vo., tan cloth with morocco spine labels lettered in gilt. First edition of the “first sociological text on an Afro-American community published in the United States.”
This copy bears the bookplate: “Presented to the Great Barrington Free Library,” beneath which was inscribed, “The Author, Prof. W. E. Du Bois, Atlanta, Georgia.” A foundational copy linking Du Bois to his hometown of Great Barrington, particularly to the library where he no doubt spent considerable time studying.
